About SCPC 

The South Carolina Policy Council (SCPC) is South Carolina's longest-serving free market research organization.  SCPC was founded in 1986 by Thomas Roe as an independent, nonpartisan research organization dedicated to promoting and protecting the principles of limited government and individual liberties, free markets, and traditional South Carolina values. For decades, SCPC has been a leader in tax reduction and reform, private property rights, education reform, government deregulation, transparency and governmental accountability, and efforts to expand individual liberty.   

Position – Research Analyst 

Work status – Full time/ In-residence position 

Salary – $35,000 starting  

Location – Columbia, South Carolina 

Job Responsibilities 

  • Identify state and local government barriers to citizen prosperity through original research 
  • Publish summaries, reports and essays that promote limited government policies and empower readers with the tools to hold public decision-makers accountable 
  • Monitor the South Carolina legislative session and committee meetings to provide updates on bills as they advance through the legislative process 
  • Draft bill summaries for the website that convey their impact on the public in a clear and concise manner 
  • Identify state and local government barriers to citizen freedom through original research. 
  • Help with the use of social media accounts to maximize the organization’s research impact 
  • Attend committee meetings and sit in on session at the Statehouse 

Requirements 

  • Bachelor’s degree, either obtained or near completion (preferably in political science, economics, English, history, public administration, or journalism) 
  • Strong writing ability 
  • Sharp critical thinking skills 
  • Experience with social media management and video production preferred but not required 
  • Proficient in Microsoft programs
